Sandie Andersen does more than serve coffee at Starbucks. She cares about the people on the other side of the counter. She takes the time to listen, even when the line is getting longer. That’s how Sandie learned that one of her long time customers, Annamarie Ausnes was losing the fight with polycystic kidney disease. A kidney transplant was inevitable but donors were not.

Working two jobs and still finding time for community volunteer work, Sandie is no stranger to compassion in action. She got tested and learned she was a blood match. She made the offer. Went through the surgery. Both women are doing fine.

The everyday mystics are those among us who choose to serve the most benevolent good of others. Some of those choices are not easy or comfortable. But the mystics are faithful to a higher purpose and a courageous course of action. And the lessons they teach by their example inspire and empower those who learn from them.
